Ravensthorpe Summer Fun Fest brings the community together to move more

More than 500 people came together at Holroyd Park on Saturday 22 August for the Ravensthorpe Summer Fun Fest, celebrating community, activity and the newly improved park.

The event was a fantastic example of what can happen when local organisations come together to create opportunities for people to get active, try something new and enjoy their local surroundings.

One of the highlights of the day was a free bike giveaway, with seven young people receiving a brand-new bike in recognition of their efforts to litter-pick and help keep the park tidy throughout the event.

It was a great way to celebrate young people making a positive contribution to their community, while giving them the opportunity to enjoy being active on two wheels.

Little Bikers were also on hand delivering free learn-to-ride sessions, supporting 66 children on the day. The sessions gave children the chance to develop their cycling skills and build confidence in a fun and supportive environment.

Following the success of the Summer Fun Fest, Little Bikers have been running further learn-to-ride and cycle confidence sessions at Holroyd Park on Sundays throughout September, from 10am–12pm. The sessions are giving local families ongoing opportunities to develop their skills, get active and make the most of the improved park environment.

The Summer Fun Fest brought together a wide range of local organisations, each playing a part in making the day happen and creating opportunities for local people.

Partners involved included BoxKing Academy, Ignite Sports Club, Ravensthorpe Community Centre, Dewsbury West FC, Ravensthorpe Residents Action Group, Ravensthorpe in Bloom, Evergreen Active, Kirklees Youth Alliance, Soroptimist, Dewsbury Policing Team, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, Kirklees Active Leisure (KAL), Community Plus, Sadaqah Jariyah, Kirklees Domestic Advice Service (KDAS), Pennine Domestic Abuse Partnership (PDAP) and RASAC.

From sport and physical activity to community groups, emergency services and support organisations, the event showed the value of bringing different parts of the community together.

The Ravensthorpe Summer Fun Fest is a great example of how active places, community engagement and accessible activities can work together to help more people get moving.

Whether it’s learning to ride a bike, playing sport, volunteering to look after your local park or simply getting outside and enjoying a community event, there are lots of ways to build more movement into everyday life.

With the ongoing Little Bikers sessions at Holroyd Park, families can continue to build their cycling confidence and make the most of the space long after the Summer Fun Fest has finished.

It’s all about creating places and opportunities where everyone can move more, together.
